Setup refers to all the changeover and adjustment activities carried out on a production line when switching from the last good product to a new one, covering the entire period until the first good product is obtained. SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) is a proven lean manufacturing methodology first developed at Toyota by Shigeo Shingo, aimed at reducing setup times to the shortest possible duration.

Internal (machine stopped) and external (machine running) steps are separated, internal steps are converted into external steps as far as possible, the process is simplified and made permanent.
